Singer Jamie Davis is an alumnus of the Count Basie
Orchestra, and that's the strongest influence you
hear on this warm and winning collection of jazz and
pop standards, which includes songs by Stevie Wonder
(a wonderful basie-style arrangement of "Isn't
She Lovely" -- a song that no father of a daughter
can listen to without tearing up) and George Harrison
as well as more conventional fare by Cole Porter and
Rogers and Hart, among others. Davis' voice is a pleasure
to hear, a richly colored instrument with a nice,
sharp edge, and the big band that accompanies him
is top-notch. The package also includes a bonus DVD
with a "making of" documentary. Very, very
nice. (Rick Anderson)
